Turton Provides Women's Soccer Double Overtime Game-Winner Against Emerson

Emma Turton

Boston, MA --- Emma Turton (Mechanic Falls, ME) netted the game-winner with 4:20 left in the second overtime to propel the WPI women's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over host Emerson on Saturday.

WPI levels its overall record at 5-5-2 while upping its conference ledger to 2-1-1.  Emerson is now 4-6 on the year and 1-2 versus NEWMAC foes.

Turton beat a defender to the left side and deposited her fourth tally of the season and sixth of her career.

After a scoreless first half, the host Lions got the scoring started when Natalie Benjamin (Shrewsbury, MA) put the hosts ahead at 70:29 when she sent a free kick into the left corner of the net.  WPI answered back just over five minutes later when leading scorer Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) recovered a ball that deflected off a defender and recorded her 10th goal of the year.

Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, NY) posted three saves en route to picking up the win for the Engineers.  Melanie Escobar (Torrington, CT) collected 12 stops for the hosts.  On the day, WPI enjoyed a 26-10 edge in shots, including 7-1 in the overtimes, and doubled up the hosts in corner kicks (8-4).

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday with home matches.  WPI hosts NEWMAC rival Coast Guard at 7pm while Emerson steps out of conference play to tangle with Regis at 6pm.
