WORCESTER – Senior Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) scored her league-leading 14th goal of the season, and 33rd of her career, as WPI blanked visiting Emerson, 2-0, Saturday in a NEWMAC women's soccer matchup at Alumni Stadium. Doherty moved into a tie with former teammate Megan Forti for second place all-time in career goals.

WPI, ranked 10th in the latest NSCAA NCAA Division III New England poll, improved to 8-2-1 on the year and 2-1-1 in conference action. Emerson slipped to 7-2-1 on the season and 0-2-1 in the loop.

Doherty needed only 6:17 to score the first goal of the game when she received a pass from junior Erin Bracken (Bridgewater, MA) and raced down the field and fired from inside the box. Later in the half, sophomore Karina Larson's (Storrs, CT) free kick wrung off the crossbar in the 27th minute while an attempt by Emerson senior Christine White (Snohomish, WA) was blocked in the 39th minute. With 3:28 remaining until the break, sophomore Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH) lofted a ball above the keeper for the 2-0 Engineer lead. Sophomore Megan Hanshaw (Simsbury, CT) helped setup the scoring opportunity.

Emerson was awarded four of the five second half corner kicks and took a trio of shots late in the game beginning with freshman Rachel Lord's bid at 82:51, classmate Paige Haley followed at 83:19 and fifth-year senior Alexandra Dezenzo (Randolph, NJ) took a chance with 2:21 to play.
