WORCESTER – Junior Jane Bingel (Wrentham, MA) delivered what proved to be the game-winning goal and freshman Gabi Hoops (Stonington, CT) earned her first collegiate win as WPI edged Springfield, 1-0, in a NEWMAC women's soccer match featuring a pair of regionally-ranked teams Saturday at Alumni Stadium.  The victory was the first over the Pride in program history after the Crimson and Gray had tied SC during their last two regular season match-up.

With the win, the Engineers (10-5-1, 4-3-1 NEWMAC), ranked 10th in the initial NCAA Regional Rankings released earlier this week, reach double-digit wins for the fourth time in program history and are now one shy of tying the record held by the 2001 squad. The Pride, slotted sixth in the regional rankings, move to 9-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in conference action.

Bingel received a pass from senior Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) and chipped the ball over the Springfield keeper for the offensive difference maker in the 20th minute. Hoops tallied a pair of saves in her first clean sheet.

Sophomore Ciara Boucher (Manchester, CT) stopped a quartet of shots, including three off the foot of Doherty. Senior Nicole Fowler (Hudson, MA) tested Hoops in the 12th minute while sophomore Monique Marcelino (Farmington, CT) attempted to level the game in the 70th minute.

WPI outshot the Pride 13-6 overall - 5-2 on-goal - and were awarded two of the game's three corner kicks.

Both teams are in action on Tuesday as the Engineers host NEWMAC and city foe Clark at 7pm while Springfield heads to Simmons for a 7:30pm contest.
