Record-Setting Night As Women's Soccer Defeats Clark 3-0

Emily Doherty

WORCESTER – WPI senior Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) set the program record for goals and points in a single season as the Engineers blanked visiting Clark, 3-0, Tuesday evening in a NEWMAC women's soccer matchup at Alumni Stadium.

With the win, the Engineers (11-5-1, 5-3-1 NEWMAC), who are ranked 10th in the latest NCAA Division III Regional Rankings, also tie the 2011 team with their program-best 11th win of the season. The Cougars, meanwhile, slip to 2-13-2 overall and 0-8-1 in conference play.

The victory also secured the Crimson and Gray a third straight NEWMAC Tournament berth and keep WPI in control of its own density for a home game in next Tuesday's quarterfinals.

Doherty scored her league-leading 16th goal of the season in the 74th minute off an assist by freshman Karina Larson (Storrs, CT). She initially setup a close range tally by junior Emma Turton (Mechanic Falls, ME) in the 51st minute before aiding senior Jaime Espinola's (Greensboro, NC) fourth goal of the season in the 79th minute. Doherty ended the game with a NEWMAC-best 37 points on the season.

Clark senior netminder Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, MD) stopped a game-best 10 shots on the night, including a Doherty laser that was punched away in the second minute. Doherty tested Paolini again in the 61st minute while the follow-up by Turton was also stonewalled. WPI freshman Gabi Hoops (Stonington, CT) needed to halt one shot to secure her second consecutive shutout.

The Engineers held a commanding 22-1 advantage in shots while the Cougars held a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior Kara Fischer (Belmont, MA) was credited with the only shot on goal for the guests.

WPI concludes the regular season with a trip to Mount Holyoke on Saturday for a 2pm contest. Clark hosts Emerson in its season finale at 3pm, also on Saturday.
