SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Engineers of WPI defeated the Mount Holyoke, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in NEWMAC women's soccer action. With the win the Engineers improve to 9-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference, while the Lyons fall to 2-10-1 overall and 0-5 in NEWMAC action.

WPI was led by senior captain Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH), who scored three points on a first half goal and an assist. Sophomore midfielder Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) also scored a goal, while senior Mari Bailey (North Providence, RI) recorded an assist.

In net for the Lyons, junior goal keeper Amanda Manaster (Beverly Hills, CA) led the game in saves with eight, taking on 10 shots through 90:00 minutes. Mount Holyoke owned the advantage in corner kick attempts in the second half by a 1-0 margin.

With 15th minute of the match, Bailey sprinted down the right side of the field past a pair of MHC defenders. Bailey then passed it forward to Gomarlo, who was sitting at the top of the box. She then took two dribbles and launched a shot outside Manaster's reach to go up 1-0 in the contest.  It was the senior's seventh goal of the season and 15th of her career.

In the second half, Bailey was the helper as she fed the ball to McCrea from the right side of the field. McCrea dribbled laterally and sunk a shot from deep middle field to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage.  It was the All-America's team-best eighth goal of 2017 and 13th in her career.

The Lyons had its best chance to score with just over six in the second half when senior captain Suz Rose (South Hamilton, MA) received the ball with space 25 yards out from goal. Rose gathered control of the ball and fired a shot on goal, but junior keeper Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, Conn./Stonington) was there for the save.

WPI maintained control for the rest of the half to take the win, the 24th career victory for Hoops, 18th by shutout.
