Gomarlo's Goal and Strong Defensive Effort Propel Women's Soccer Past Wheaton

Norton, MA --- Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH) netted the lone goal early in the second half and Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, CT) collected her third straight shutout as WPI women's soccer went on the road and picked up a key 1-0 NEWMAC victory on Tuesday afternoon.  

The Engineers extend their winning streak to three straight and unbeaten string to six in a row (5-0-1) while improving to 10-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play.  Wheaton is now 11-3-1 on the season and 5-2 in NEWMAC action. 

After a scoreless first half, which saw the Engineers outshoot the Lyons 7-3, WPI broke through with the game's only goal in the 51st minute.  It was Gomarlo's eighth marker of the season, tying her with Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) for the team lead, and 16th of her career. 

Wheaton picked up the pace after going down a goal but would come up empty handed, getting just three shots on goal.

Hoops notched her fifth shutout of the season and 19th of her career.  The Crimson and Gray have now kept their opponents off the scoreboard for a streak of 296 minutes and 11 seconds.  Tuesday's backline featured starters Megan Hanshaw (Simsbury, CT), Kirsten Southan (Owings, MD), Karina Larson (Storrs, CT) and Georgie Cromwell (Mukilteo, WA) and reserve Izzy Sillo (Rutland, MA).

For the game, WPI held a 15-9 edge in shots while Wheaton attempted 10 of the contest's 10 corner kicks.  Lyons netminder Leann Wolf (Santa Maria CA) collected six stops on the day. 

WPI is back in action Saturday morning with an 11am home game against Wellesley.  Wheaton is at home the same day with a 1pm matchup with Mount Holyoke.
