Fourth-Seeded Coast Guard Sinks Fifth-Seeded Women’s Soccer in NEWMAC Quarterfinal

New London, CT --- Junior Claire Hurley (Waterford, CT) scored in the 63rd minute to secure a 1-0 victory for Coast Guard women's soccer over WPI on Tuesday night in the NEWMAC quarterfinal. 

Tonight's win is the first ever NEWMAC tournament victory for Coast Guard, as they were 0-6 in tournament play. Coast Guard, who will travel to MIT for the NEWMAC tournament semifinal on Thursday night with a time to be determined, improves to 11-6-1 on the season. WPI ends its season at 11-6-2.

Hurley set the Coast Guard single-season points record with 31 tonight, tallying 11 goals and 9 assists on the year. Hurley sunk her shot from just outside the box into the top left corner to score her record breaking goal. Sophomore Sabrina Robertson (Jacksonville, FL) recorded an assist on the play to help the Bears take the 1-0 lead.

Kirsten Southan (Owings, MD) tried to put one away for WPI in the 80th minute but freshman goalkeeper Katharina Commins (Altoona, IA) was there to make the save for the Bears. Despite the loss, WPI held the advantage in shots, 9-8. While the Bears held the advantage in corner kicks, 2-0.

Commins had five saves for the Bears to earn her fifth shutout of the season and improves her record to 10-6-1. WPI senior keeper Gabriela Hoops (Southington, CT) had two saves in the game and finishes her season at 10-6-2.
