Salem, MA --- Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) and Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT) both accounted for a second half goal as visiting WPI opened the 2019 women's soccer campaign with a 2-0 shutout of Salem State on Saturday morning.

After a scoreless first half that saw the visiting Engineers attempt all 16 of the stanza's shots, the guests dented the scoring column midway through the second half when McCrea bury a feed from rookie Lilly Proulx (New Boston, NH) at 63:59 for 25th career goal.

The Crimson and Gray added a valuable insurance tally nearly 15 minutes later when Leah Beauton's (Colchester, CT) corner kick was headed home by Orrico at 78:46 for the junior's eighth career marker.

Mandy St. Germain (Worcester, MA) earned her first-ever clean sheet en route to her fifth career victory in net.  The senior tri-captain stopped an Emily Boyle (Manchester, NH) shot in the 74th minute to keep the hosts off the scoreboard.  St. Germain's shutout was bolstered by the backline of Ellie Patten (Scarborough, ME), Annika Keck (Oakland, CA), Georgie Cromwell (Mukilteo, WA) and Kirsten Southan (Owings, MD).

Rebecca Sabino (Peabody, MA) was strong in net for the Vikings, making 15 saves and she received help from her backs who cleared the ball off the line on three different occasions.

For the match the Engineers accounted for 26 of the 27 shots and attempted all seven corner kicks.

WPI plays middle match of season-opening three-game road trip Tuesday at 7pm when its travels crosstown to face city rival Worcester State.  Salem closes out a brief two-game home stand Wednesday at 7pm versus Rivier.
