Providence, RI --- The WPI women's soccer team recorded uts third shutout of the 2021 season with a 2-0 victory over Rhode Island College in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Engineers move above the .500 mark for the season at 3-2, while Rhode Island College falls to 0-5.
Both WPI goals came in the first half, including the eventual game-winner, just seven minutes after the opening whistle. That came off of the foot of Ranya Basma (Shirley, MA), who scored her second goal of the year to put the visitors ahead. Basma took a through ball from Elizabeth Rocco (Fresh Meadows, NY), then finished after dribbling around RIC keeper Reagan Kerecz (Tolland, CT), who made 11 saves in a losing effort.
Just under 20 minutes later, Grace Casey (Winchester, MA) doubled the WPI lead. Casey intercepted a clear from Kerecz to set herself up for the unassisted goal, her second of the year.
The Engineers had 23 shots, including 13 on goal, while WPI faced five shots, and all four that were on target were turned aside by senior Lauren Paul (Schaghticoke, NY), who earned her first victory and shutout of the year.
WPI will look to build off this victory on Wednesday night when they welcome Wentworth to Worcester for a 7 pm matchup.
Rhode Island College hosts Regis on Wednesday at 6 pm in Providence.
