Women’s Soccer's Hot-Streak Halted at Smith 3-1

Northampton, MA --- The hot-shooting WPI women's soccer team was unable to net its third consecutive victory, falling at Smith Saturday afternoon 3-1.

Despite another 22 shots on the day, including seven on target, Olivia Toolin (Bedford, NH) was the lone Engineer to net a goal on the day as Smith netminder Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, MA) made six saves in the game. WPI also managed 10 corner kicks to Smith's three.

Toolin finished with three shots, two on goal and the score on the day for WPI. Lilly Proulx (New Boston, NH) blasted off five shots, two on net, and Hanna Wolfgang (Holliston, MA) took four shots on the day, one on goal. Smith boasted three different goal scorers on the day in Natalie Dionne (Brooklyn, CT), Madelyn Boyle (Milford, MA), and Avery Kaplan (Chicago, IL).

On Smith's first shot of the day in the 21st minute of play, Boyle got the Pioneers on the board 1-0. Toolin subbed into the game in the 27th minute, and shortly thereafter made it a 1-1 ballgame in the 35th minute of action.

The two teams traded shots, and just before the half, Kaplan gave Smith a 2-1 advantage with a goal in the 41st minute. Abbie Ellis (Londonderry, NH) aided on what would be the game-winner.

Proulx reeled off a trio of shots to begin the half, but it was Dionne who would end up with the goal in the 57th minute to make it a 3-1 game.

WPI never relented, taking 14 of its 22 shots in the second half but were unable to best Falkenberg.

Lauren Paul (Schaghticoke, NY) saw action in goal for the Engineers on the day, finishing with two saves on five shots faced in the game.

The Engineers look to get back to their winning ways at home against Wheaton on Tuesday at 7pm while Smith will play host to Western New England at 4pm on Tuesday afternoon.
