Rocco and Kick Post Second Half Goals as Women's Soccer Bests Emerson 2-0

Annika Keck - 2021 WPI Women's Soccer

WORCESTER -- The WPI women's soccer team picked up its fifth clean sheet of the season and second-straight victory in a 2-0 conference win over Emerson on Saturday afternoon.

The Engineers were led by goals from Elizabeth Rocco (Fresh Meadows, NY) and Annika Keck (Oakland, CA) and some big saves by keeper Lauren Paul (Schaghticoke, NY) in the victory.

WIth the win, WPI picks up its first conference victory of the season and improved to 6-3 overall (1-1 NEWMAC). Emerson falls to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference action.

Rocco finished the game with a goal off of two shots on goal while Keck took two shots on the day, and the one on goal found the back of the net.

Emerson was unable to get on the board but was led by Jennifer Van Pelt (El Cerrito, CA) who finished with a pair of shots on the day. Emerson goalkeeper Amara Schaub (Torrance, CA) allowed the pair of goals while also making five saves in the outing.

After a scoreless first half, a long cross into the box from the right side of the field started the scoring attack in the 56th minute by Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT), who's point blank header attempt was initially saved by Schaub. But she was unable to cleanly gather the save and Rocco was right there to scoop up the loose ball and slam it into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.

A corner kick in the 84th minute turned into an insurance goal for the Engineers. Caitlin Bonavita (Wilbraham, MA) set up her teammate with a perfectly executed corner that turned into a header goal for Keck, her second score of the season which gave WPI some breathing room in the victory.

Both teams return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 28. WPI will play host to the University of New England at 6pm while Emerson will head out to Western Mass for a 4:30pm meeting at Amherst.
