Orrico's Golden Goal Gives Women's Soccer the Edge in Matchup of Regionally-Ranked Squads

Sofia Orrico - 2021 WPI Women's Soccer

WORCESTER -- It took an overtime period and a laser shot by Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT) but the WPI women's soccer team outlasted the University of New England 1-0 in a mid-week, non-conference tilt on Tuesday night.

Both teams headed into the game with a United Soccer Coaches Regional Ranking, and 7th ranked WPI upset No. 3 University of New England just 1:08 into the overtime period.

WIth the win the Engineers improve to 7-3 on the season while UNE drops to 5-3-1, losing their first game in three matches.

The Engineers had a key opportunity to score late into the game but a couple of diving saves from UNE goalkeeper Sydney Gillingham (Standish, ME) kept the board clean and sent the game into overtime.

After UNE had a brief opportunity to score off the opening kick, WPI goalkeeper Lauren Paul (Schaghticoke, NY) scooped up a loose ball bouncing in the box and booted it to midfield where Orrico settled it, raced up the left side of the field, dribbled into the box and roped a shot across Gillingham and into the right side of the goal for the game-winner.

Paul finished with her fourth clean sheet of the season making three saves on the night while Gillingham faced 11 shots on goal on the night by the potent WPI offense making 10 saves before allowing the ultimate game-winner.

Both Orrico and Lilly Proulx (New Boston, NH) finished with four shots on the night, with all of Proulx's coming on net.

The Engineers are back in action on Saturday with their first match in the month of October when they face Clark at home at 3pm. UNE will also return to the pitch on Saturday with a homecoming game against Wentworth, also at 3pm.
