Women's Soccer Suffers Loss in Late Push by Wheaton

Allison Escott - 2021

NORTON, MA – Hosting Wheaton climbed from behind with two back-to-back goals to hand WPI the 3-2 loss at Mirrione Stadium this afternoon.

Both teams were scoreless through nearly the first 60 minutes of play before both teams totaled five goals to end the game. Wheaton scored twice in a span of 80 seconds to erase a 2-1 deficit in the final four minutes of play, including a Lily Brown (Warwick, RI) game-winner with 2:23 remaining on the clock.

Wheaton struck first when Jaime Rattenni (West Greenwich, RI) notched her fifth goal of the season in the 60th minute from a free kick opportunity. Within the next five minutes of play, freshman midfielder Madisyn Bagby (Aurora, CO) placed a ball to junior back Annika Keck (Oakland, CA) to score her third goal of the season for the Crimson and Gray to tie the score at 1-1.

The Engineers took a 2-1 lead when sophomore back Allison Escott (Columbia, CT) converted her first collegiate goal after lifting a shot into the upper-right side in the 74th minute.

Nevaeh Petruzzi (Exeter, NH)connected Rattenni at the top of the 18-yard box, where Rattenni turned and lifted a shot into the upper left corner, just outside of Lauren Paul's (Schaghticoke, NY) reach at 86:17 to make it 2-2.

Petruzzi crossed to Brown in front of the net who tipped in the late goal in the 88th minute to secure the victory over the Engineers.

The Engineers held a 12-11 edge in shots, while the Lyons owned a 7-3 margin on corner kicks.

Paul registered three saves for WPI, while Wheaton's sophomore keeper Gabby Marcus (Austin, TX) stopped three shots in the win.

WPI will host Wellesley at 4pm on Saturday, Oct. 9, at Alumni Stadium. The Lyons will host Mount Holyoke at Mirrione Stadium at 1pm on Saturday.
