Proulx and Bonavita Notch Goals, Leach Posts Shutout for Women's Soccer at WestConn

Caitlin Bonavita - WPI Women's Soccer 2022

Danbury, CT --- Senior forwards Lilly Proulx (New Boston, NH) and Caitlin Bonavita (Wilbraham, MA) tallied goals just seven minutes apart in the first half to propel WPI to a 2-0 victory over host Western Connecticut in a non-conference women's soccer contest Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, the Engineers move to 2-0 on the season while WestConn levels its mark at 1-1 in 2022.

WPI began to amp up the pressure in a six-minute stretch just prior to its first goal, tallying five shots by five different players.  Proulx got the scoring started at 26:12 when she knocked home a feed from Hannah Wolfgang (Holliston, MA) for her eighth career goal. Just 7:27 later, the Crimson and Gray added to their advantage when Bonavita netted her third career marker at 33:39.

The first half saw the Engineers enjoy a 13-5 edge in shots.  The second half was much tighter as WPI attempted 7 of the stanza's 12 shots, including the last six of the match over the last 23 minutes.  The guests ended the match with a 20-10 advantage in shots and a slim 4-3 lead in corners.

Ashleigh Matsis (Milford, NH) and Proulx led WPI with five and four shots respectively and Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, CT) and Kyla Norton (East Hampton, CT) teamed up for seven shots of the hosts.

WPI goalkeeper Kelsey Leach (Tolland, CT) notched six saves en route to posting her second win of the season and first career solo shutout. WestConn netminder Kristen Roessler (Danbury, CT) made seven stops on the day.

WPI is back in action on Wednesday in the middle match of a three-game road trip.  The Crimson and Gray face Wesleyan in a 4:30 pm kickoff.  Western Connecticut returns to the field Tuesday, hosting in-state rival Trinity at 6 pm.
