WORCESTER -- A late first half goal was the difference maker between regionally ranked foes as Union defeated WPI 1-0 on Wednesday night.

The Engineers (3-2) are ranked fifth in the United States Coaches Region II Poll while Union (5-0) came into the contest ranked eighth in the Region III Poll this week.

Sam Friedman (Brookline, MA) netted her fourth goal of the season, and as many in the last three games, in the 42nd minute of action. A long ball sent down the field from Katherine O'Brien (Brookline, MA) was collected by Friedman and shot into the net for the ultimate game-winner.

WPI outshot Union 13-10 on the night and 8-6 on goal.

WPI netminder Kelsey Leach (Tolland, CT) stopped five of the six shots coming her way on the day while Union had a pair of goalkeepers assist in the shutout with Abby Mitty (Wayland, MA) taking the first half of action making four saves while Rachel Berliner (Westwood, MA) earned the save playing 45 minutes of scoreless action between the posts.

Both teams are back in action Saturday, Sept. 17 as WPI plays host to Smith at 1pm while Union returns to the field at Lasell at 3pm.
