WORCESTER -- Visiting Roger Williams downed the WPI women's soccer team 2-1 in non-conference action played in rainy conditions at Alumni Stadium on Tuesday. The win lifts the Hawks to 3-4 on the season, while the Engineers dip to 3-3-1.
WPI piled on 30 total shots to Roger Williams' 10, but the Hawks connected on two golden chances and got a solid effort from keeper Bailey Bourque (Litchfield, NH) in net to earn the win. Bourque finished the night with 12 saves.
Each team tallied a first-half goal, with Roger Williams opening the scoring in the 32nd minute. Leah Yucius (Duxbury, MA) corralled a long pass downfield, pulled the defender out of position, and walked in for the score, her first of the season.
Though WPI peppered 16 first-half shots, it was a Roger Williams miscue that gave the Engineers the equalizer. Olivia Toolin (Bedford, NH) sent a free kick into the box and despite several WPI players in reach, the ball caromed off a Roger Williams player for an own goal that knotted the game at 1-1.
The Hawks pushed it to 2-1 late in the second half. A free kick was laced high in the goal and Grace Kelly (Milford, NH) tucked it into the back of the net for the lead.
Following the Roger Williams goal, WPI packed on four more shots, two on goal, but couldn't net the tying score.
Kelsey Leach (Tolland, CT) got the start in goal for WPI, allowing one goal on three shots with a pair of saves in 45 minutes. Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) faced five shots on goal in 45 minutes, making four saves.
WPI jumps back into conference play this weekend, traveling to Emerson for a 1pm start on Saturday. Roger Williams has a non-conference tilt on Thursday, playing at Brandeis at 7pm.
