WPI 3, Simmons 2
Boston, MA --- Senior co-captain Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT) registered 17 kills and 21 digs to help visiting WPI rally for a thrilling 3-2 victory over Simmons in non-conference women's volleyball action on Tuesday evening. The result made a winner in the Division III debut of WPI head coach Alex Temkin.
After Simmons won the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-23, the Engineers stormed back to take the final three sets by counts of 25-17, 25-18, and 15-12. Holmberg led the way by posting a .667 hitting percentage after being credited with only 3 assits in 21 attempts. Bailey Sarber (Westerly, RI) chipped in with seven kills while Becca Mattern (Vernon, CT) and Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) each added six.
Rookie setter Alex Rangel (Weston, FL) came off the bench and collected a team best 24 assists. Joining Holmberg with double-digit dig totals include Lauren D'Angelo (Wallingford, CT) with 18, Sarber with 14, and Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) with 13.
WPI (1-0) now turns its attention to a busy weekend as they will be participating in the Regis Invitational. The Crimson and Gray are slated to play three matches on both Saturday and Sunday. Simmons (0-1) participates in the Emerson tournament on Friday and Saturday.
