Volleyball Comes Up Big in Fifth Set in Victory Against Rhode Island College

Worcester MA --- Sophomore Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) led all players with 29 digs to help host WPI defeat Rhode Island College 3-2 in non-conference volleyball action on Thursday evening.  The Engineers took the match by scores of 25-10, 25-23, 26-28, 21-25 and 15-6.  

Reeling after dropping sets three and four, WPI scored the first five points of the fifth set and never trailed. The Engineers totaled four kills and did not make an error on 13 attempts in the decisive set. WPI is now 11-1 on the season while the Anchorwomen slip to 7-6.

Freshmen Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) and Bailey Sarber (Westerly, RI) both amassed eight kills.  Senior Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT) collected 25 digs while Sarber added 15 and classmate Lauren D'Angelo (Barrington, RI) chipped in with 14. 

Alex Rangel (Weston, FL) dished out 23 assists and totaled 13 digs for WPI.  The Engineers had a strong night at the net, registering 10 total team blocks.  Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) led the block parade with two solos and three block assists.  

Freshmen hitter Brenna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) and junior opposite April Oberhelman (Woonsocket, RI) led the way for Rhode Island College.  Boyer racked up 19 kills and 13 digs while Oberhelman tallied nine kills and a team-best 27 digs.  

Setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) was credited with 26 assists and 13 digs for the Anchorwomen, who fought off a pair of match points in the third set.  Courtney McKiernan (Scituate, RI) added 13 digs for the visitors.  

WPI returns to NEWMAC play on Saturday, venturing to Babson for a 1pm match.  Rhode Island College opens up Little East action on Saturday.  The Anchorwomen entertain Eastern Connecticut and Plymouth State beginning at noon.
