Worcester, MA --- WPI rallied to take games four and five and claim its second straight victory over host Clark with a 3-2 win in NEWMAC women's volleyball action on Tuesday night at the Kneller Athletic Center.
With the win, the Engineers improve to 18-6 overall, while the Cougars slip to 6-12. Both teams have identical 2-5 ledgers in NEWMAC action.
WPI, who knocked off the Clark in the championship match of the Worcester City Volleyball tournament earlier this season, has now won four of the last five meetings with the Cougars.
Clark jumped out to an early lead, taking the first game 25-19. The Engineers rebounded to take game two 25-22, before the Cougars regained momentum and grabbed game three, 25-14.
Things seemed to be going in Clark's favor until WPI hit .273 in game four to take an easy 25-15 win, forcing the decisive game five.
The Engineers raced out to an early lead in the final frame and never looked back, taking it 15-9.
WPI was paced by Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT), who turned in a 16-kill, 23-dig performance. She was aided by freshmen Bailey Sarber's (Westerly, RI) 10 kills and 17 digs and Belinda Nwagbara's (Santa Rosa, CA) 15 kills.
Clark, meanwhile, got 17 kills apiece from Kristin McGinty (Vail, CO) and Amira Tranchell(Falmouth, MA) to lead their offensive attack. Freshman setter Emily Sullivan (Nashua, NH) tied her career-high with 42 assists, while classmate ToniMarie Illuzzi (Manorville, NY) added 10 kills and 11 digs.
Emily Visone (West Hempstead, NY), the school's all-time leader in digs, turned in a game-high 27, pushing her career total to over 1,400.
The Cougars return to action on Friday with a pair of matches at the CCNY Tournament, while the Engineers return to the court on Saturday with a road trip to Eastern Nazarene for a tri-match with Husson.
