Weston, MA --- The WPI volleyball team rebounded from a tough loss Friday to regional power MIT by posting a trio of 3-0 victories on Saturday to wrap up competition in the two-day Regis Tournament. The Engineers, who saw their two-year reign as tournament champs end with this weekend's second place performance, defeated Worcester State (25-14, 28-26, 25-12), Suffolk (25-21, 25-12, 25-13) and host Regis (25-18, 25-19, 25-16).
The Engineers needed extra play in the second set but still came away with a 3-0 win over Worcester State in morning action. WPI was paced by a game-high 13 kills from Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) and nine kills from Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA). Kim Woodward (Clifton Park, NY) and Alex Rangel (Weston, FL) combined to dish out 31 assists including a game-high 20 from Woodward. Defensively, the Engineers were led by 22 digs from Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) and six digs apiece from Bailey Sarber (Westerly, RI) and Nwagbara. Sophomore Holly Ganser (Seward, AK) notched a game-high four blocks in the win.
Kristen Koles (Billerica, MA) led the offensive attack for Worcester State with seven kills while Megan Brown (Dartmouth, MA) and Becky Lebel (Millbury, MA) chipped in with four kills each. Joanne Grenier (Orange, MA) handed out 18 assists while Megan Brown and Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) picked up nine and seven digs each, respectively. Julianna Tyo (Pepperell, MA) added a pair of solo blocks in the setback.
WPI handed Suffolk a 3-0 loss in the second games of the day. WPI was led by nine kills from Sarber and eight kills and two blocks from Beovich. Porambo posted a game-high 10 digs while Elyssa Dorenfield (Reading, MA) added eight digs of her own. Woodward paced the offense for the Engineers dishing out a match-high 17 assists.
Melissa Griffin (Byfield, MA) led the Suffolk attack by posting four kills while Maggie Hillman (North Andover, MA) and Hailey Atkinson (Branford, CT) chipped in with three kills apiece. Colby Kennedy (Old Lyme, CT) handed out three assists while Tori Brilland (North Andover, MA) picked up one block in the setback. Giamarys Sierra (Carolina, PR) led the Rams with a team-high 12 assists.
WPI defeated host Regis College 3-0 in the final match of the Regis Pride Invite. The Engineers were led by eight kills and three blocks from Ganser while Alyssa Corini (Pompton Plains, NJ) added seven kills and six digs. Rangel led the team with eight digs while Woodward set up the offense with a match-high 18 assists.
Julie Endara (Boca Raton, FL) led the Regis attack by posting five kills to go along with five digs. Domingas Gomes (Brockton, MA) also added four kills and eight digs. Megan Pratt (Rockland, MA) handed out 12 assists while Sara Gold (North Hollywood, CA) had a standout game with 19 digs and a pair of service aces. Jackie Silver (West Hills, CA) had a pair of kills to go along with a block.
For her efforts, Beovich was named to the All-Tournament team. The junior amassed 32 kills in 13 sets while hitting at a .333 clip. She also added 19 aces.
WPI is scheduled to be back in action on Thursday at 7:30pm versus Lesley in its first standard dual meet of the season.
