Porambo, Beovich, Nwagbara and Sarber Key in Volleyball's Win Over Babson

Worcester, MA --- Junior classmates Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) and Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) each smashed 12 kills to pace host WPI to a 3-1 victory over Babson in a NEWMAC volleyball matchup on Tuesday evening.  WPI took the contest by scores of 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-22). 

The Engineers see their record move to 7-3 on the year and 2-1 in conference action.  Babson levels its overall record at 6-6 and dips to 1-2 in NEWMAC play. 

After dropping the first set, WPI trailed 18-15 in the second game.  The Crimson and Gray forced a side out and then saw Bailey Sarber (Westerly, RI) rattle off eight straight points on her serve as the Engineers went on a pivotal 10-1 spurt to win the set and turn the momentum around.  

The duo of Beovich and Nwagbara both hit over .300 for the hosts.  Beovich (.367) made just one error in 30 attempts while Nwagbara (.321) committed just three miscues in 28 attempts.  Sarber and Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) added nine and eight kills respectively. 

Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) had a fantastic day for the Engineers.  The senior co-captain amassed 34 digs while not committing a single return error in 30 attempts.  Kim Woodward (Clifton Park, NY) dished out a game-best 37 assists while Alex Rangel (Weston, FL) contributed seven helpers and Dorenfeld tallied 14 digs. 

Babson was lead offensive by senior Meg Flaherty (Hollis, NH).  The Beaver tri-captain launched a match-best 14 kills on the evening.   

Kelly Schulte (Riverside, CA) aided the Babson effort with five kills while Kathleen Lynch (Quincy, MA) doled out a team-high 24 assists.  Karla Flores (San Juan, PR) and Kseniya Stepanova (Upland, CA) registered 24 and 13 digs respectively for the visitors, while Cathy Tinker (Woodbridge, CT) chipped in with two solo and four assisted blocks and Ashley Strangio (Rockville Center, NY) added a solo block to go along with four assisted blocks. 

WPI is back in action on Thursday, traveling to Becker for a 7pm contest against the Hawks.  Babson is off until Saturday when its hosts Curry and Maine-Farmington in a tri-match beginning at 11am.
