Woodward Doles Out 47 Assists as Volleyball Splits a Tri-Match

Worcester, MA --- Eliza Pyne (Atherton, CA) and Chrissy Gee (San Franciso, CA) totaled a combined 42 kills over two matches to help Bates sweep a volleyball tri-match versus host WPI and Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon.  The Bobcats took each match by 3-1 scores (25-16, 28-26, 21-25, 25-18 over WPI and 25-21, 25-27, 25-23, 25-21 over Salve Regina) while WPI knocked off Salve Regina 3-0 (29-27, 25-15, 25-16) in the final match of the day. 

Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) led the WPI charge against Salve Regina, tallying ten kills and four service aces. Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) anchored the defense with 17 digs, four kills, one service ace and one solo block. Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) tallied five kills and five digs, while Kim Woodward (Clifton Park, NY) set the table with 28 assists. 

Taylor Violet (Tiverton, MA) handed out 14 assists for Salve Regina while Julianne Barry (Randolph, MA) led the way with six kills.  Tara Kuck (Huntington Station, NY) and Jennifer Duggan (Merrimack, NH) each swatted a pair of blocks and Dianna Tauro (Melrose, MA) contributed 15 digs. 

Against Bates in the first match of the day, Dorenfeld had team highs with ten kills and 18 digs. Beovich added seven kills and six digs. Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) led the defense with 16 digs, while Nwagbara had six kills and 11 digs. Attack errors were the Engineers' Achilles heel throughout the match, as they hit only .014 as a team. 

Gee smacked 10 kills and scooped 15 digs for the Bobcats while Pyne added nine kills.

Tess Walther (Santa Monica, CA) led all players with a match-high 38 assists and Nicole Russell anchored the defensive effort with 18 digs. 

In the middle match, Pyne highlighted the Bates effort by filling the stat sheets with 14 kills, five blocks and four aces.  Emma Getsinger (Darien, CT) chipped in with 10 kills and 13 digs while Walher amassed 47 assists, Gee registered nine kills and nine digs and Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, CA) totaled eight kills and three blocks. 

Duggan and Clare Adams (New Concord, NH) each smacked nine kills for the Seahawks against Bates.  Barry ended with eight kills and seven blocks while Violet notched 32 assists. 

WPI is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to MIT for a 7pm NEWMAC match.  Salve Regina looks ahead to Wednesday when it travels to Roger Williams for a battle of CCC unbeatens while Bates entertains Trinity in a NESCAC contest on Friday.
