D'Angelo Nabs All Tournament Accolades as Volleyball Finishes Second at Regis

Weston, MA --- The WPI Volleyball team spit a pair of matches Saturday at the Regis Pride Invitational. The Engineers rally from an early 3-1 deficit to defeat Worcester State in a semifinal contest before falling to regional power MIT 3-1 in the championship tilt. Senior Lauren D'Angelo (Wallingford, CT) earned all-tournament accolades for the Engineers who are now 3-1 on the young season.

WPI used set scores of 18-25, 25-20, 25-10, and 25-17 in the 3-1 win over Worcester State. Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) posted a match-high 11 kills and added four digs, while Jenny Wallace (Holden, MA) added nine kills, five service aces, and eight digs. Sarah Cook (New Paltz, NY) and Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) also registered six kills apiece. Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) handed out a match-high 22 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double, while Alex Rangel (Weston, Fla.) chipped in with 11 assists of her own. D'Angelo paced the defense with 18 digs.

Worcester State was led by nine kills from Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA), while Emily Cox (North Andover, MA) added eight of her own in the setback. Becky Lebel (Millbury, MA) also posted seven kills. Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, NY) handed out 21 assists and added five digs, while Megan Brown (Dartmouth, MA) and Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) each posted 11 digs.

In the final, Cambridge's Engineers needed four sets to take home the Pride Invitational Championship with a 3-1 win by set scores of 25-14, 22-25, 25-18, 25-10. Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, MA) notched a game-high 12 kills and added four block assists to lead MIT. Trinity Leonard (Mill Valley, CA) added nine kills of her own, while Tatiana Berger (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and Jenny Astrachan (Austin, TX) added eight kills apiece. Nicole Gagnier (Atlanta, GA) handed out a game-high 38 assists, while Katie Spielbauer (Lakeview, MI) had 21 digs. Berger also added three service aces to go with 10 digs for MIT.

Beovich and Wallace led the WPI attack with six kills apiece. Nwagbara added five kills of her own to go with a pair of block assists while Dorenfeld handed out a team-high 20 assists in the setback. Bailey Sarber (Westerly, RI) led the Engineers with 11 digs, while D'Angelo added nine digs of her own.

The Crimson and Gray will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Simmons to take on the Sharks at 7pm.
