Volleyball Sweeps a Tri-Match at Westfield State with Framingham State

Westfield, MA --- WPI defeated both Westfield State University and Framingham State University by 3-1 scores in a women's volleyball tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Westfield State University. 

In the second match of the day, Framingham Statetook  the first set from WPI, 26-24. But WPI, now owning a 9-4 record, swept the next three sets, 25-20, 25-15, 25-15.

Alex Rangel (Weston, FL) racked up 36 assists for WPI and Lauren D'Angelo (Wallingford, CT) had 17 digs. Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) and Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) both finished with nine kills.

In the third match, Westfield State was highly competitive in a 3-1 setback (25-17, 24-26, 25-22, 25-19) to WPI.

Rangel rolled up 38 assists for a two-match total of 74. D'Angelo had a match-high 16 digs and Beovich registered a match-high five blocks. Leading WPI up front were Nwagbara (12 kills) and Jenny Wallace (Holden, MA) (8 kills).

Junior Holly Ganser (Seward, AK) combined for seven kills on the day (.400) and joined Nwagbara (.459) and Beovich (.444) in hitting .400 or better on the day.

Shannon Shea (Chelmsford, MA) totaled 11 kills, two aces, and three digs for the Owls. Julia Warner (Lee, MA) had six kills and Stana Wheeler (Sunderland, MA) posted 23 assists.

In the opening match, Framingham State swept Westfield State, 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-15) in a key Massachusetts State Athletic Conference meeting. Framingham is now 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Westfield falls to 1-11 and 0-1.

The Rams' front line of Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, MA) (14 kills), Danielle Girard (Tivoli, NY) (12 kills) and Ashley Nee (Hanson, MA) (10 kills) combined for 36 kills for the key statistics in the MASCAC matchup. Nee also had a match-high four blocks. Kassandra Jermyn (Auburn, MA) recorded 20 assists for the winners and Michelle DeJesus had 15 digs.

Shea had five kills and four service aces for the Owls. Kayleigh Shea (Chelmsford, MA) contributed nine digs and Wheeler totaled 13 assists.

WPI returns to NEWMAC play on Wednesday, entertaining Wellesley at 7:30pm.
