Weston, MA --- WPI opened the Greg Poole era with a pair of 3-1 victories at the Regis Pride Invitational on Friday evening. The Engineers defeated Mount Ida 25-21, 23-25, 25-11, 25-19 in their first match before knocking off Eastern Nazarene 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18.
Poole was making his debut on the WPI sideline after tallying 259 wins during 15 years at Western New England and Western Connecticut.
In the opener, freshman Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA) led the way with 16 kills, while senior Holly Ganser (Seward, AK) and Maddy Werth (Bedford, MA) chipped in with eight kills apiece to lead the Engineers to a 3-1 win. Tomerlin also paced her team with 11 digs to go along with two block assists. Freshman Carolina Meyer (Easton, MA) led all players with 32 assists, and also had two service aces and seven digs. Kenzie Whalen (Hollis, N.H.) pitched in for WPI with nine kills, two service aces, and a team-leading three blocks.
Mount Ida (0-2) was led by the duo of Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT) and Hillary Kostner (Corona, CA), who combined for 14 kills in the losing effort. Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, MA) paced the Mustangs with 23 assists, while she also had nine digs. Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, NH) had a team-leading 11 digs to go along with one kill and one assist. Freshman Maryssa Dwyer (Quincy, MA) led all players with five service aces.
Against Eastern Nazarene, Whalen paced WPI with nine kills, while Tomerlin added seven of her own with seven digs. Werth and Sarah Cook (New Paltz, NY) added six kills apiece, with Werth adding a game-high 16 digs in the win. The Engineers used 16 aces to fuel the 3-1 victory including six service aces from Tomerlin and five from Whalen. Meyer paced the offense with 24 assists.
ENC (0-2) was led by eight kills and eight digs from Hannah Welsh (Derry, NH), while Leann Williams (Oxford, PA) and Kortney Jenkins (Bunker Hill, WV) added six kills apiece for the Lions. Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, MA) added five kills of her own to go with three total blocks. Lauryl Berger (Laurel, DE) handed out 20 assists, while Sam Losano (Elverta, CA) led the Lions with 15 digs on the night. Dana Day (Coarsegold, Calif.) added four kills and seven digs in defeat.
WPI concludes play in the two-day tournament on Saturday, facing host Regis (1-1) at 10am and Rivier (1-1) at noon.
