Worcester, MA --- Freshman Megan Gebhard (Howell, MI) paced MIT with a .450 hitting percentage on 20 total attempts as MIT defeated host WPI 3-1 (25-11, 25-7, 22-25, 25-12) in the NEWMAC Women's Volleyball opener for both squads on Tuesday evening in Harrington Auditorium. With the win, Cambridge's Engineers improve to 9-5 and the Crimson and Gray fall to 5-4 on the year.
Gebhard and her teammates combined to hit at a .318 clip in the four-set affair. Junior Jenny Astrachan (Austin, TX) posted a .333 percentage on 15 chances while senior Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, MA) and freshman Jennie Glerum (Redmond, WA) hit .714 and .286 on seven chances, respectively. Junior Nicole Gagnier (Atlanta, GA) added 20 assists and freshman Tori Wuthrich (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI) posted 15 digs.
WPI was led by Freshman Caroline Meyer (Easton, MA) with nine of the squad's 11 helpers and six digs. Senior Sarah Cook (New Paltz, NY) added 11 digs while Freshman Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA) pitched in with six.
Through two sets, MIT held the 2-0 advantage (25-11, 25-7) and hit an impressive .520 with Gebhard leading the way with a .636 percentage in the opening frame.
WPI rebounded and took the ultra-completive third set. Neither side had more than a two point lead until the host Engineers staked a five tally bulge at 24-19. The guests staved off a trio of set points before a kill by sophomore Adrienne Weishaar (Chester, NH).
MIT came roaring back with a 5-1 lead in the fourth en route to the 25-12 triumph to win its 34th straight match over WPI.
The Engineers return to Harrington Auditorium on Saturday for a tri-match with Wheaton and Westfield State beginning at noon. MIT entertains Springfield on Saturday at 1pm.
