Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Ashley Dumont (Silver Spring, MD) hit .588 with 11 kills to lead Coast Guard past host WPI, 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-10) in a NEWMAC women's volleyball match on Thursday night at Harrington Auditorium. With the win, the Bears improve to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play while the Engineers dip to 5-8 on the season and 0-4 in the loop.
Coast Guard senior Kelsey DePorto (Frankfort, IL) tallied 10 kills as freshman Rebekah Muller (Denair, CA) added seven and sophomore Kelsey Hickle (Plano, TX) pitched in with five. Sophomore Maggie Hine (Richmond, VA) recorded a match-best 27 assists and senior Samantha Marmolejo (El Paso, TX) posted a game-high 10 digs.
Senior Sarah Cook (New Paltz, NY) and senior Holly Ganser (Seward, AK) paced the Crimson and Gray with six kills. Freshman Caroline Meyer (Easton, MA) led the Engineers with 16 helpers to go along with classmate Maddy Werth's (Bedford, MA) team-best eight digs.
Down 10-8 in the first set, Coast Guard rattled off six consecutive points to take a 14-10 lead. After a WPI timeout, the Engineers claimed two of the next three points before the Bears closed the frame with a 10-1 spurt.
The second set was tied 9-9 when Coast Guard went on a 4-0 run. WPI chipped away at the lead to eventually pull even once again at 16-16. After Werth halted another four-point outburst by the guests, the Bears collected five of the final seven points of the set for the 2-0 lead.
Coast Guard opened the third stanza with a 3-0 advantage and sealed victory with an 11-1 run to close out the match.
WPI travels to Wellesley on Saturday for a noon NEWMAC contest while Coast Guard steps out of conference action for an 11am home match against nationally-ranked Roger Williams.
