Worcester, MA --- Rose Drummond (Rye, NH) posted a double-double and combined with Kristi Hammond (Yona, Guam) to hit .348 as visiting Smith defeated WPI 3-0 in a NEWMAC volleyball contest on Thursday evening.
The Pioneers took the match by scores of 25-16, 25-21, 25-13 and move to 14-6 on the season and 4-3 in conference action. WPI is now 6-15 overall and 0-7 in NEWMAC play.
Drummond posted five kills as the visitors scored 10 of the 13 first points and never trailed in the opening stanza. The Engineers turned the tables to start the second set, jumping out to a 13-9 advantage. Smith clawed back and tied the set at 13 and then scored the final four points to earn the 2-0 lead. In the third set, the Pioneers hit at .355 clip and led the entire way after breaking a 1-1 deadlock.
Drummond finished with a match-best 12 kills to go along with 11 digs, a solo block and a pair of block assists. It marked the senior's first double-double of the season and ninth of her career.
Hammond swatted seven kills and notched 11 digs while Julie Voorhes (Ramona, CA) totaled 10 digs and Paige Sarlandt (Cloverdale, CA) chipped in five kills. Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, CA) and Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, MA) each doled out 13 assists while Smith stuffed the stat sheets with eight digs and four services aces.
Senior Holly Ganser (Seward, AK) paced the WPI hitting attack with nine kills in 21 attempts while classmate Sarah Cook (New Paltz, NY) added five kills and a game-high 15 digs. Sophomore Jenny Wallace (Holden, MA) contributed three kills and an assist in her 2013 season debut and Caroline Meyer (Easton, MA) led all players with 22 assists on the night.
Both squads are back in action on Saturday. WPI heads to defending MASCAC champion Framingham State for a tri-match with Worcester State. Smith heads to Mount Holyoke to face Little East Conference opponents Keene State and Plymouth State beginning at 10am.
