Springfield, MA --- The Springfield College women's volleyball team hit a program-record .662 for the match as it handled visiting WPI in Dana Gymnasium on Wednesday night in NEWMAC play. Set scores for the Pride were 25-6, 25-18, 25-19.
The win boosts the Pride's record to 19-5, 8-1 in league play, while the Engineers fall to 7-17, 0-8.
Springfield entered the game with the nation's second-best hitting percentage and put on an offensive show, pounding out 47 kills on just 65 swings while committing four errors. The .662 hitting percentage bests the previous school mark of .638 that was set against Carleton-Minnesota on Sept. 17, 1993. On a national scale, the hitting percentage was the fourth-highest hitting mark for a three-set match in the history of Division III.
Individually, Lauren Holt (Granby, CT) posted a school record of her own, totaling 11 kills on all 11 of her swings for a 1.000 hitting percentage to go along with four blocks. The first-year became just the ninth player in Division III history to have a perfect hitting percentage on over 10 attempts, while her 11 kills were the second-most kills without an error ever in Division III.
In her first career start, Marnae Mawdsley (Bolton, CT) handed out 25 assists, while Molly Giannattasio (East Lyme, CT) added 14 helpers.
Kelsey McGayhey (Shelter Island, NY) totaled eight kills at a .545 clip and posted a match-high five blocks, and Tessa Smolinski (Hebron, CT) tallied nine kills, hitting .750. Daniella Crismani (San Francisco, CA) recorded eight kills, and Amy Entel (Berkley, MA) picked up two service aces and three digs.
For the Engineers, Jenny Wallace (Holden, MA) had a team-best six kills, while Sam Bircsak (Acton, MA), Maddy Werth (Bedford, MA), and Kenzie Whalen (Hollis, NH) all had four kills. Caroline Meyer (Easton, MA) handed out 13 assists as WPI hit .150 for the contest.
Springfield opened up the match hitting .800 in the opening set before posting a .522 percentage in the second frame. In the final set, the Pride erupted for 20 kills at a remarkable .704 percentage.
The Pride will next play in the Volleyball Hall of Fame Invitational this upcoming weekend, squaring off against some of the top teams in the region. Springfield will begin with top-ranked Williams at 7:00 pm at Smith. WPI is at Endicott Saturday for a tri-match with Western New England.
