Thrilling Rally Catapults Volleyball into Regis Tournament Semifinals

Weston, MA --- The WPI volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat host Regis and complete a perfect opening day of 2014 Pride Invitational.  The Engineers swept Becker 3-0 in its first match and captured the Pool A Tournament.  The Crimson and Gray with face Pool B runner-up Gordon in one semifinal while MIT and Regis tangle in the other 10am semifinal.  The championship match is slated for 2pm. 

WPI forced a fifth and deciding game, winning the final set by the score of 15-13, to improve to 2-0 on the year with a 18-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-13 victory. Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA) led the Engineers with 13 kills and added 11 digs, while Jenny Wallace (Holden, MA) had a double-double of her own with 10 kills and 17 digs for WPI. Kelly Rathje (Scituate, MA) recorded a game-high 19 digs and added six service aces to go with seven kills from Sam Bircsak (Acton, MA). Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA) handed out 28 assists on the night to go with seven aces, five digs, and a pair of blocks. 

Regis drops to 1-1 with the setback despite a career-best 16 kills and nine digs from Gracie Molinari (Ft. Lauderdale, FL). Shay Faber (Fort Lauderdale, FL) and Kristina del Rey (Miami, FL) chipped in eight kills apiece, while Nicole Connolly (San Mateo, CA) had seven of her own. Haley Schulte (Fullerton, CA) dished out a match-high 33 assists to go with three kills and eight digs, while senior libero Marilia Ramos (Chimbote, Peru) had a team-best 17 digs to go with a pair of aces. 

The Engineers opened the day by besting Becker College 25-11, 25-18, 25-17. Katie Hurlock (Burlington, CT) led the Engineers with seven kills and Daigle added six. Feeley led the squad with 13 assists and added a service ace and a dig. Caroline Meyer (Easton, Mass.) recorded 11 assist and four aces, while Wallace (Holden, Mass.) added four service aces, five digs and three kills. Rathje paced WPI's defense with 11 digs and also added one ace. 

Becker's defense was led by Kristi Hadzewycz (Daytona Beach, FL) who had six digs, while Charlene Landry (Gorham, ME) and Arianne Chipman (Hingham, MA) recorded five digs apiece. Landry and Danielle Robbie (Bellingham, Mass.) registered two kills apiece, with Landry adding a team-high five assists.
