WPI Captures 2014 Worcester City Volleyball Championship

Worcester, MA --- Led by tournament MVP Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA), WPI captured its eighth Worcester City Volleyball Tournament, and second in three years, with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-16) victory over Worcester State in the eye-opener and a 3-1 (9-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-22) triumph over Clark in the championship match. The Cougars defeated Becker 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-17) while Worcester State won the consolation match by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-22) margin.

Feeley was joined on the All-Tournament team by fellow Engineer Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA), Clark's Savannah Sanford (San Anselmo, CA) and Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), Worcester State's Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) and Becker's Samantha Caouette (Montague, MA).

The day began in WPI's Harrington's Auditorium with the final two matches play in the Sports and Recreation Center due to heat and high humidity.

WPI 3, Worcester State 1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-16)

Daigle notched a double-double for the Engineers with 19 kills and 11 digs. Feeley chipped in with 35 assists and 11 digs. Jenny Wallace (Holden, MA) added 27 digs while Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA) had 10. Sam Bircsak (Acton, MA) contributed with five blocks. Worcester State was paced by Jasper with 21 kills and six digs. Jamika Townsend (Virginia Beach, VA) and Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, NY) each doled out 17 helpers. Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, MA) and Kaylee Leduc (Swansea, MA) combined for 40 digs.

Clark 3, Becker 0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-17)

The Cougars received eight kills from Hannah Fox (Dracut, MA) to go with six each from Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, NM), Ramos and Mei Conde (Union City, CA). Tori Whitney (Sunderland, MA) handed out 13 assists as Kaitlyn Stuck (Bourne, MA) and Ramos collected nine digs apiece. Glass-Smythe also added eight digs for the defending Worcester City Tournament Champions. Danielle Robbie (Bellingham, MA) led Becker with five kills while Charlene Landry (Gorham, ME) doled out nine assists. Kirsti Hadzewycz (Daytona Beach, FL) and Chase Peterson (Redding, CT) each had nine digs as Marissa Turner (Coventry, RI) dug out eight and Landry had seven.

Consolation: Worcester State 3, Becker 0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-22)

Jasper added 18 more kills on the day in addition to 13 digs for the Lancers. Lewis amassed 21 assists and Townsend pitched in with 16. Leduc led the way with 16 digs followed by Cabral with 15. Hadzewycz had 11 kills for Becker while Robbie and Caouette each had five. Landry handed out 20 helpers. Turner led the Hawks with 11 digs to go with seven from Peterson and six each from Robbie, Caouette and Hadzewycz.

Championship: WPI 3, Clark 1 (9-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-22)

Daigle closed out the day with 15 more kills and eight digs while Feely amassed 32 assists and served up four aces. Wallace tacked on eight kills and 10 digs. Kelly Rathje (Scituate, MA) pitched in with 17 digs. Ramos led the Cougars with nine kills and 16 assists. Mia Cattaneo (Santa Barbara, CA) dug out 13 balls and Sanford accumulated 10 of her own. Whitney doled out 20 assists to go with Courtney Phan's (Seattle, WA) 11. 

WPI (5-2) hosts Wentworth on Wednesday at 7pm, Clark (3-4) entertains Rhode Island College on Tuesday at 7pm, Worcester State (4-1) heads to Wesleyan for a trio of matches beginning on Friday at 7:30pm against Curry, and Becker (1-6)  travels to Curry on Tuesday for a 6pm match.
