Wallace and Strong Hitting Key Volleyball's 3-1 Win Over Wentworth

Jenny Wallace

Worcester, MA --- Jenny Wallace (Holden, MA) narrowly missed a double-double to help WPI defeat visiting Wentworth 3-1 (26-24, 16-25, 25-17, 25-8) in a non-conference volleyball matchup on Wednesday night at Harrington Auditorium.

Wentworth (4-3) raced out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set before the Engineers clawed back within one following a kill by Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA). The guests eventually pulled away for a 16-11 lead, but the Crimson and Gray rallied back with a 6-1 outburst to even the set at 17-all. A kill and ace by Daigle gave WPI (6-2) a 19-17 advantage.  Wentworth eventually went back in front following a kill by Sydney Meyers (Arnold, MA). The Engineers, who staved off a pair of set points, benefited from a trio of attack miscues and a bad set to emerge with the 26-24 victory.

The Leopards evened the match with a 25-16 set that saw WPI take a pair of early leads until the momentum turned in Wentworth's favor. The guests never looked back after gaining the 7-6 lead following an attack miscue. Meyers, Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, CT) and Griffin Sacco (New Fairfield, CT) all served up an ace for the Leopards.

In the third set, WPI, who hit at a 70-percent clip, regained the lead by virtue of a 25-17 advantage despite a .444 effort by Wentworth's Jordan Young (Derry, NH). Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA) doled out nine helpers and Kelly Rathje (Scituate, MA) led the Engineers with five digs. The set was closely contested before WPI gained a 9-8 advantage and pulled away with the set.

The Engineers capped the match with a quick 25-8 fourth set behind five aces, including two from Daigle. Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA), Brooke Klepper (Miami Beach, FL) and Daigle combined to serve 12 of the Crimson and Gray's 25 points.

Wallace had 11 kills and nine digs while Daigle paced the squad with 15 kills and five aces to go with eight digs. Feeley dished out 30 assists and Caroline Meyer (Easton, MA) added 10 helpers. Rathje collected team-best 18 digs.

Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, MA) had seven kills and seven digs while Meyers contributed five kills and seven digs. Amanda Hunton (Monroe, NY) and Shannon Ponce (San Jose, CA) combined for all 21 Leopard assists with 11 and 10, respectively. Curran added a match-best 24 digs in the effort.

The Engineers travel to the Trinity Invitational on Saturday for a 1pm match against Westfield State and a 3pm appointment with the hosts. Wentworth ventures to Newton, MA on Saturday for a tri-match with Lasell and Maine Maritime beginning at 1pm.
