Providence, RI --- The WPI volleyball team closed out play at the Johnson & Wales Invitational on Saturday with a pair of losses. The Crimson and Gray dropped a tough 3-2 (25-16, 20-25, 18-25, 25-19, 15-11) decision to the host Wildcats before falling 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-20) to Little East Conference frontrunner Western Connecticut.
Setter Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA) was selected to the All-Tournament team for WPI. The sophomore doled 32 assists and added 10 digs and three block assists versus Johnson & Wales before notching 21 helpers against Western Connecticut. Earlier in the tournament, Feeley totaled 62 assists in matches with Bridgewater State and Plymouth State on Friday.
Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA) and Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA) both smashed 10 kills versus the hosts while Sam Bircsak (Acton, MA) and Brooke Klepper (Miami Beach, FL) chipped in with eight and seven respectively. Tomerlin (14 digs) and Daigle (13 digs) both tallied double-doubles in the match while Kelly Rathje (Scituate, MA) (16) and Caroline Meyer (Easton, MA) (11) also reached double figures in digs.
Ann Kaczowka (Seekonk, MA), Kleeper and Daigle all amassed six kills versus the Colonials. WPI hit its tournament-best .324 in the second set with 15 kills as a team with just three errors in 37 attempts. Kaczowka led all players with 13 digs and Rathje registered 11. Klepper had a strong match at the net, ending with a solo block and three block assists.
WPI (9-12) returns to NEWMAC play Tuesday when it hosts league leading Babson at 7pm in Harrington Auditorium.
