Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Kenzie Whalen (Hollis, NH) hit a jaw-dropping .833 and Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA) registered a double-double as the WPI posted a 3-0 sweep of visiting Simmons in a non-conference volleyball match played in Harrington Auditorium on Thursday evening. The Engineers took the match by set scores of 25-11, 25-15, 25-12.
With the victory, WPI moves to 11-19 on the season, while Simmons, who saw its impressive eight-match win streak snapped, slips to 11-14.
As a team the Engineers hit a season-best .305 far surpassing its previous year-high of .233 versus Bridgewater State. The Crimson and Gray trailed only twice in the match - both early in the second set - and began the third stanza by notching nine of the first 11 points to ensure a triumph for the first time in three weeks.
Whalen belted 10 kills without a miscue in in 12 attempts. Tomerlin totaled 10 kills and a match-best 14 digs en route to her fifth double-double of the season and eighth of her career. Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA), who had missed the previous six matches with an injury, handed out 35 assists and added eight digs while Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA) led all players with 11 kills as Brooke Klepper (Miami Beach, FL) and Sam Bircsak (Acton, MA) chipped in with six and five apiece. Libero Kelly Rathje (Scitute, MA) stuffed the stat sheets with the six digs and four service aces and Caroline Meyer (Easton, MA) pitched in with seven digs.
Simmons received four digs each from Emmee Ashby (Payson, AZ) and Sarah Woodward (Deerfield, MA). Woodward hit .286 for the guests without committing an error in 14 attempts. Andalyn Duke (Litchfield Park, AZ) aided the Sharks effort with 13 assists while Woodward and Alex Itasaka (Bradford, MA) both amassed eight digs.
Two players from each team finished with a pair of block assists, including Feeley and Kleeper from WPI and Nicole Alberghini (Northboro, MA) and Abby Hart (Westfield, MA) from Simmons.
Prior to the match, Gyneth Campbell (Albany, NY) and Adrienne Weishaar (Chester, NH) were recognized during a Volleyball Appreciation Night Ceremony. For more on the honorees, check out Coach Greg Poole's interview below.
