Volleyball’s Tomerlin Notches 1,000th Career Dig in Home Tri-Match

WORCESTER The WPI women's volleyball team dropped Saturday afternoon's tri-match against Wellesley (3-1) and non-conference Rivier (3-0). Senior libero Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA) registered her 1,000th career dig including a team-high 16 against Wellesley in the first match of the day.

Rivier improves to 13-1 with the two victories. WPI falls to 10-3 and 3-2 in NEWMAC action while Wellesley moves to 9-6 and 3-1 in the NEWMAC. All three teams will be back in action Tuesday September 27th at 7:00 p.m. The Engineers break from conference play when they travel to Newbury while Rivier visits non-conference Keene State and Wellesley hosts Mount Holyoke.

Wellesley 3, WPI 1 (25-16, 25-22, 13-25, 25-23)

Trailing 2-0 heading into the third set, WPI extended the match with a 25-13 victory in game three. Senior outside hitter Maddy Werth (Bedford, MA) was on fire, recording four kills on five attempts while sophomore outside hitter Casey Hunt (Granby, CT) followed up with three kills of her own.

It was not enough. Wellesley sophomore Yasmine Reece (New Rochelle, NY) dominated the net, registering a .341 attack percentage, tallying 18 kills on 41 attempts with just for errors as the Blue earned the third NEWMAC win of the year and ninth overall. First year outside hitter Kennedy Ulfig (Saline, MI) followed up with 10 kills on 29 attempts en route to the victory.

Werth powered the Engineer offense finishing with 18 kills on 27 attempts with just three errors for a staggering .556 attack percentage. Hunt earned a double-double, recording 10 kills and 12 defensive digs.

Rivier 3, Wellesley 0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-12)

The senior middle hitter tandem of Dana Mott (Medway, MA) and Lauren Silverman (Chelmsford, MA) led the Raiders to a 3-0 sweep of the Blue in the second match of the day. The duo combined to hit .385 with 20 kills and two block assists.

Wellesley sophomore setter Michelle Li (Scarsdale, NY) was nearly perfect from the floor, recording five kills on six attempts for an .833 attack percentage. Reece once again led the offense with eight kills while Ulfig and first year Megan Shoop (Cypress, CA) followed up with seven and six kills, respectively.

Rivier 3, WPI 0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-18)

In the final match of the afternoon, Rivier opened up taking the first set, 25-13. Trailing by seven late in the second set, they turned the game around utilizing an 8-1 run to take a two-set lead as they went on to claim the match in three sets.

The Raiders were led by a balanced offensive attack, hitting .333 as a team in the match. Silverman led the way with five kills on seven attempts while senior outside hitter Chelsey Hussey (Lebanon, CT) followed up with four kills. Sophomore setter Hayley Macken (Clifton Park, NY) paced the offense with 75 assists while recording a .750 attack percentage.

Werth led the WPI offense in the second match of the day, posting a .400 attack percentage, tallying four kills on 10 attempts. On the defensive side, she went up with teammate, first year middle hitter Sandra Duarte (Valencia, CA) for a block in the third set. Hunt followed up with three kills on seven attempt and one miscue to hit .286 in the match.

All three teams resume action at 7pm Tuesday night. WPI treks to Newbury, Wellesley hosts Mount Holyoke, and Rivier ventures to Keene State.
