Volleyball Drops Five Set NEWMAC Thriller to Wellesley

WORCESTER -- Lauren Gedney (Huntersville, NC) smashed a match-best 22 kills, including the final point of the contest, as Wellesley rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to knock off host WPI 3-2 in a NEWMAC volleyball match-up played Saturday afternoon in Harrington Auditorium.  

The Blue took the conference match by set scores of 13-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-20, 15-10 and up their record to 10-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference action.  WPI is now 7-6 on the season and sees its conference ledger level at 2-2. 

In the fifth and deciding set, Wellesley scored four of the first five points and held an 8-5 advantage before the hosts, behind the serving of Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA), rattled off the next four points to surge ahead 9-8.  The would be the last advantage WPI would have on the day as Wellesley responded with seven of the match's last eight points to escape with the victory. 

WPI had jumped out to the 2-0 lead behind sizzling hitting of .409 in the opening set and posting a .342 clip in the second stanza. 

Gedney hit an eye-popping .447 on the day for the Blue with the 22 kills and five errors on 38 attempts.  She was the only Wellesley player in double figures in hitting.  Izzy Seebold (Concord, NC) doled out 35 assists while collecting four kills in nine tries (.571). Meghan Shoop (Cypress, CA) headlined three guests in double digits in digs with 14 while Becca Aristotelidis (San Antonio, TX) served five aces. 

Colleen Mullins (Andover, MA) paced three double figures hitters for WPI with 13 while Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) and Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, WA) each added 10 with Wetmore (3 errors, 16 attempts) posting an outstanding .438 hitting percentage.  Rookie Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) collected her 11th double-double of the season with 33 assists and 11 digs and Kayleigh Campbell (Wilbraham, MA) amassed 12 digs.  Miloshi finished with five kills and nine digs and Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, MA) totaled six kills and four assists for the Crimson and Gray. 

Both teams have 7pm home NEWMAC matches on Tuesday.  WPI hosts Mount Holyoke while Wellesley entertains Smith.
