Chicopee, MA --- Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) notched her second career double-double as the WPI volleyball team completed a sweep at the two-day Blazer Invitational by sweeping host Elms 3-0 Saturday afternoon. The Engineers took the tightly-contested match by set scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-22.
With the victory, WPI moves to 4-0 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in the weekend tournament. On Friday the Crimson and Gray swept Colby-Sawyer and SUNY Cobleskill by identical 3-0 match scores.
Wetmore finished with 16 kills and 10 digs. The graduate student hit at a .378 clip, making only two errors in 37 attempts. Her previous double-double occurred in a five-set win over Eastern Connecticut on October 26th, 2019 when she tallied 17 kills and 10 digs. Natalia Wierzbicki (Wareham, MA) had six kills and no errors in 16 hits (.375) and Kaleigh Hess (Berea, KY) and Paige Garland (Nashua, NH) both registered five kills.
Wetmore was one of four Engineers in double figures in digs. Jia Yazon (South Windsor, CT) led the way with 14, while Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) tallied 12 and Garland 11. Reynolds also double-doubled as she doled out a match-best 31 assists and Yazon and Garland each served a pair of aces.
For the match WPI hit .178 with a peak of .279 in the third and final set when the Engineers posted 14 kills and committed just two errors in 43 tries. On the day, WPI was not charged with a ball handling error.
Next week is a good week to catch WPI in Harrington Auditorium as the Boynton Hillers will be at home three times. It starts Tuesday at 7pm versus Lasell in a match that was moved from Newton due to construction on the Lasers home court. The Engineers also entertain Dean on Thursday at 7pm and host Wentworth and Anna Maria in a Saturday tri-match beginning at 11am.
