Wetmore and Garland Pace Hot-Hitting Volleyball Past Emmanuel

BOSTON -- The WPI women's volleyball team cruised past host Emmanuel, 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-19) in non-conference action on Thursday evening in the Jean Yawkey Center Gymnasium.  The Crimson and Gray have won six straight and improve to 16-5 overall while the Saints dip to 8-14 on the season. 

The squads traded points in the opening set to a 10-9 score before the Engineers took control of the action, closing the set on a 15-2 run powered by a strong service game from Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) en route to the 25-11 win. 

In the second frame, WPI stepped on the pedal early racing out to a 14-2 lead as senior Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA) and sophomore Paige Garland (Nashua, NH) paced another set of strong service game to power the visitors to another 25-11 victory and a 2-0 lead on the match.    

The Engineers carried that momentum into the final set, jumping ahead 7-0 early on to take control. The Saints battled and got within striking distance late in the frame, pulling to within three points at 20-17 following a kill by sophomore middle Seana Phillips (Middleboro, MA) but WPI regrouped to pull out the 25-19 win for the road sweep. 

Wetmore led all players with a match-high 12 kills, four aces and a .360 hitting clip while Garland chipped in with nine winners and a .333 hitting percentage. Miloshi paced the WPI defensive front with a match-best 13 digs and four aces.  Catherine Reynolds (Concord, MA) and Lilly Taylor (Weymouth, MA) doled out 18 and nine assists respectively while Maddie Sanborn (Londonderry, NH) smacked four kills in six attempts without an error and Kaleigh Hess (Berea, KY) joined Wetmore and Garland with two block assists apiece.

EC junior Tatiana Correia (Peabody, MA) posted a team-high 12 digs and senior Caitlin Tannian (Reading, MA) added five kills. 

As a team, WPI recorded an impressive .322 team hitting clip while holding the Saints to a negative -.037 night. 

Emmanuel returns to action on Saturday, October 23 traveling to Norwich for an important GNAC showdown starting at noon.  WPI is back the same day playing host to Worcester State in non-conference play scheduled for 1pm in Harrington Auditorium.
