New London, CT --- Noelle Tursky (Fort Myers, FL) match-highs of 14 digs, seven aces and 23 assists leading host Coast Guard to a 3-0 win over WPI in a NEWMAC match Tuesday evening.
Coast Guard won 25-14, 25-20, 25-21 to run its win streak to three and improve to 16-6 overall and 7-2 in the NEWMAC while WPI had its win streak snapped at seven and the Engineers drop to 17-6 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
With the win, Coast Guard secured at least the third seed in next week's NEWMAC tournament. It's highest seed since 2011 when the Bears were the second seed. The loss, coupled with Clark's victory over Wellesley denies WPI a chance to earn a tournament spot.
Amanda Dake (Victor, NY) led the Bears with 10 kills to go with 12 digs and four aces while Mary Sweet (Chardon, OH) had a team-high four blocks.
Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, MA) paced WPI with nine kills while Maddie Sanborn (Londonderry, NH) finished with seven. Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) had a team-high 22 assists and 10 digs and Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA) chipped in with nine digs and a pair of aces. Wetmore and Jia Yazon (South Windsor, CT) amassed eight and seven digs respectively.
Dake served nine straight points as Coast Guard led 11-1 to start the match. WPI would get as close as 18-12, but the Bears used a 7-2 spurt to win 25-14.
WPI maintained a lead early in the second set and held an 11-8 advantage before Coast Guard ran off six straight again powered by Dake serving for an 14-11 lead. The Engineers closed to 20-19 before the Bear ran off five of the last six for the 25-20 win.
Coast Guard scored the first six points of the third set with Tursky serving and led 9-1. WPI would not go quietly as they scored seven of the next nine points to cut the deficit to 11-8. The Bears held a slim 16-14 edge before score the next five straight highlighted by back-to-back aces by Tursky increasing the lead to 21-14 en route to the 25-21 win.
Both teams have Senior Day matches at home on Saturday. Coast Guard wraps up the regular season when they host #19 MIT at noon while WPI closed out the 2021 campaign with a 1pm match with Wellesley.
