WORCESTER -- The WPI volleyball team went 2-0 in their home opener, tallying 3-0 sweeps over visiting Husson and SUNY Delhi. The Engineers topped Husson 25-15, 25-9, 25-19 and beat SUNY Delhi 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 to move to 2-1 on the season. The wins marked the first two victories at WPI for head coach Cailyn Straubel. In the middle match of the day, Husson (1-1) defeated SUNY Delhi (0-3), 3-1, 25-18, 19-25, 25-19, 25-18.
Match 1: WPI 3, Husson 0
WPI swept Husson 3-0 to open Saturday's action, holding the Eagles to a negative attack in the 25-15, 25-9, 25-19 win. The Engineers' Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA) led all players with 10 kills, while Emily Hudson (Melrose, MA) added six. Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) put up 23 assists with eight digs, while Jia Yazon (South Windsor, CT) led WPI with nine digs and six aces.
Husson was led by Cheyenne Young's (Eagle River, AK) six kills, while Alyvia McIntyre (San Jose, CA) had 15 assists with nine digs. Amber Lemay (Belmont, NH) rounded out the statistical leaders with a match-high 12 digs.
WPI charged out of the gates with a .323 attack in the first set, going up 4-0 and not looking back in the 25-19 win. Set two was a lopsided affair, with the Engineers holding Husson to a -.125 offense, cruising to a 25-9 victory. WPI used a late surge in the final set, breaking a 12-12 stalemate and sealing the sweep with a 25-19 victory.
Match 2: Husson 3, SUNY Delhi 1
Husson grabbed a win in its first match of the day, a 3-1 victory over SUNY Delhi. The Eagles took the match with set scores of 25-18, 19-25, 25-19, and 25-18.
The Broncos got an 11-kill, eight-dig performance from Stephanie Burke (West Winfield, NY), while Zoe Rodi (Pine Bush, NY) had seven kills and 12 digs and Jaiden Venute (Flushing, NY) had 25 assists. Rebecca Heuler (Piermont, NY) notched a match-high 17 digs, while Gianna Militi (Syracuse, NY) had 12 digs and four aces.
Husson was paced by nine kills each from Alexa Beal (Westerly, RI) and Sara White (Eagle River, AK) with McIntyre putting up 33 assists in the contest. Lemay led the team with 15 digs, while Young added 13 and Beatrice Tursi (Strafford, NH) had 11.
Match 3: WPI 3, SUNY Delhi 0
In the final match of the day, WPI pulled out a 3-0 sweep over SUNY Delhi with set scores of 25-17, 25-23, and 25-19. Natalia Wierzbicki (Wareham, MA) led the Engineers' offense to the tune of 10 kills, hitting .286 with a pair of blocks. Maddie Sanborn (Londonderry, NH) added eight kills with Miloshi chipping in with seven while adding 11 digs. Reynolds distributed the offense with 23 assists and seven digs, while Yazon led WPI with 17 digs.
Sage Reinlesen (Blue Point, NY) topped the Broncos' offense with eight kills, while Burke had seven with six digs. Venute led the squad with 19 assists, adding six digs, while Heuler had a match-best 26 digs and Militi picked up nine.
WPI took over a tight set one with a 6-1 run midway through action, growing the lead to 20-13 on a block from Wierzbicki and Reynolds. SUNY Delhi cut the lead to five, but WPI finished out the 25-17 win to go up, 1-0. Set two was another close one with the Broncos leading 18-16 late in the frame. WPI then scored six unanswered points, en route to a 9-3 set winning run to take the frame 25-21. The Engineers completed the sweep erasing an early 6-3 Broncos lead, getting the final point on a Devin Roskoph (Mount Laurel, NJ) kill to take it 25-18.
Up next for WPI, the Engineers will travel to Worcester State on Thursday for a 7pm match-up against the Lancers. Husson and SUNY Delhi are both in action again on Tuesday with the Eagles playing at Bates at 6pm and the Broncos hosting Sage at 7pm.
