WORCESTER -- WPI hit a sizzling .571 in the opening set en route to defeating crosstown rival Worcester State 3-0 in a non-conference volleyball match-up contested Thursday evening. The visiting Engineers won by set scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-17.
The Crimson and Gray, which have captured three-straight matched by 3-0 scores, improve to 3-1 on the year while the Lancers dip to 0-5.
Tied 5-5 in the opening frame, WPI surged ahead 14-10 and they rattled off 10 straight points, with nine coming off the serve of Lily Eldridge (Danvers, MA), including four aces. The guests smacked nine kills and only committed one error in 14 attempts in the first set.
The Engineers never trailed in the final two sets, jumping out to a 12-4 edge in the second stanza and a 10-3 bulge in the final set.
Eldridge stuffed the stat sheers with 12 assists, eight digs, six aces and four kills on the night. Olivia Deckers (Marlboro, MA) led all players with eight kills, hitting .261 on 23 tries to go along with seven digs. Jia Yazon (South Windsor, CT) amassed 16 digs and four aces and Natalia Wierzbicki (Wareham, MA) netted a pair of block assists and was joined by Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH), Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA) and Devin Roskoph (Mount Laurel, NY) with three kills each.
Erin Gaffney (Worcester, MA) paced Worcester State with five kills and Meaghan Marcoux (North Smithfield, RI) chipped in with 14 digs.
Both teams turn their attention to tri-matches on Saturday. WPI heads to Annandale-On-Hudson, NY to square off with host Bard at noon and Ramapo (NJ) at 2pm. Worcester State remains at home, hosting Trinity at 1pm and University of New England at 5pm.
