Volleyball Outlasts Nazareth on Opening Night of RIT's Brick City Invitational

Rochester, NY --- Olivia Deckers (Marlboro, MA) and Natalia Wierzbicki (Wareham, MA) each reached double digits in kills and Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) doled out a match-best 40 assists as the WPI volleyball rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to defeat Nazareth 3-2 Friday night on the opening day of the Brick City Invitational at RIT.  The Engineers won by set scores of 22-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-21, 15-9. 

With the result, the Crimson and Gray move to 10-7 on the season while the Golden Flyers slip to 7-14 overall. 

Down 2-1 and tied 8-8 in the fourth set, a pair of kills by Deckers and a service ace from Reynolds spearheaded a critical 5-1 WPI run to level the match and force a decisive fifth set.  Even at 5-5, the Engineers rattled off six straight points, including the last five off the serve of Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA), which featured three consecutive aces.  After Nazareth netted three straight points, WPI closed out the match with the final four points, three from Deckers kills and the other via a Wierzbicki ace. 

Deckers smacked 14 kills while Wierzbicki hit at impressive .409 clip with 11 kills and just two errors in 22 tries.  Emily Hudson (Melrose, MA) also hit effectively, totaling eight kills and making one error in 20 attempts to hit .350 while establishing a new career-high in block assists with seven.  Jia Yazon (South Windsor, CT) led a balanced defensive showing with 14 digs while Victoria Escuer (Caracas, Venezuela) added 11 digs to go along with six assists and four aces and Reynolds notched a double-double with 10 digs to go with her 50 assists. 

Kaylee Kelly (Owego, NY) paced the Golden Flyers with 18 kills and 11 digs, while Tessa Grover (Penfield, NY) recorded seven kills, 28 assists and 11 digs and Zoe Tylipakis (Douglaston, NY). 

Saturday is a busy day for the Engineers as they conclude play in the Brick City Invitational at RIT.   WPI will square off with the host Tigers at 11am before meeting St. John Fisher at 1pm.
