Saturday Sweep! - Volleyball Takes Out Castleton, UMass Dartmouth by Identical 3-0 Scores

North Dartmouth, MA -- The WPI women's volleyball team did not drop a set in picking up a pair of non-conference wins in its tri-match on Saturday afternoon at UMass Dartmouth.

The Engineers defeated Castleton State in the first game of the day and then shut out UMass Dartmouth to close out the afternoon. In the middle game, the Corsairs collected a 3-0 win over Castleton. 

With their third straight win, the Engineers improved to 14-8 on the season. WPI will return to NEWMAC play on Tuesday when they host Coast Guard for an important 7pm conference matchup. 

Game 1: WPI 3, Castleton State 0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-14) 

WPI hit .333 and .379 in the first two sets and got 8 kills from Maddie Sanborn (Londonderry, NH) in their opening match. Fiona Gillis (Bedford, NH) and Audrey Stroupe (Leesburg, VA) added six kills apiece, while Victoria Escuer (Caracas, Venezuela) had 12 digs, a category the Engineers held a 53-35 advantage in. 

Gillis had two of three straight WPI kills at the end of an 8-3 run to start the opening set of the contest. The Spartans stayed within five points until 14-9, before WPI ran off 11 consecutive points to close out the game and set them on the right path towards their 3-0 win. 

Emilia Krum (Saratoga Springs, NY) and Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH) split setting duties, with Krum putting up 17 assists and Reynolds assisting on 12 points while also serving 2 aces. The Engineers had 17 aces in the game, including five by Jia Yazon (South Windsor, CT), who had eight digs in the win. 

Castleton was led by seven kills and 9 digs from Hailey Martinovich (Rochester, NY). Maddie Delsignore (Queensbury, NY) added two kills, eight digs and a team-high 11 assists in defeat. 

Game 2: WPI 3, UMass Dartmouth 0 (30-28, 25-19, 25-14) 

After taking a wild first set, the Engineers picked up their second sweep of the day by holding off the Corsairs. 

Gillis added 8 more kills to her resume, while Stroupe, Emily Hudson (Melrose, MA), and Natalia Wierzbicki (Wareham, MA) each had 7 kills. Escuer led all players with 24 digs, and Reynolds did the same with 29 assists.  

Alexandra Spezzano (Medway, MA) and Sanborn had a pair of aces each. Reynolds added nine digs, five kills, one service ace, a block and three block assists in the victory.  

Kate Wade (San Clemente, CA) was the top attacker in the match, racking up 13 kills for the Corsairs while also collecting six digs and two block assists. Emily Pogorelec (Wayne, NJ) had 17 digs and Sabrina Bordone (Massapequa, NY) added four kills without making an error, three service aces and four digs.  

WPI hit. 440 in the third set, collecting 12 kills and making just one error on 25 attempts.
