Worcester, MA --- Senior Chris Gabrielson (Westford, MA) posted a first-place finish time of 27:16 to help lead WPI to its 37th Worcester City Cross Country Championship this morning at Moore State Park in Paxton. The crown for the Engineers is their 16th straight since 1994 and 37th since the race started in 1967.
The Crimson and Gray took five top ten spots which included the first three finishers to settle for 25 team points while Fitchburg State continues their impressive run in second with 49 points. The other finishers included Assumption (76 points), Clark (97), Worcester State (113) and Anna Maria (184).
Senior classmates Dan Duffty (Haverhill, MA) and Peter Brown (Andover, MA) notched second (27:29) and third (27:41), respectively for WPI, while junior teammates Todd Alexander (Foxboro, MA) placed ninth (28:24) and Lane Thornton (Richmond, VT) added tenth (28:31). Outside the top 10 for the Boynton Hillers, freshman Shane Ruddy (Seneca Falls, NY) registered 12th (28:46), sophomore Craig Mitchell (Hanson, MA) finished in 14th (28:56) and Mario Christiner (Zurich, Switzerland) crossed the line in 15th (28:58).
For the second place Falcons, senior Kyle Schaeffer (Hudson, MA), sophomore Chris Kibler (Bath, ME) and freshman Patrick Lucas (Attleboro, MA) took fourth (27:46), fifth (28:08) and sixth (28:09), respectively while junior Matt Spano (Gardner, MA) wasn't far behind in 11th (28:43).
The Greyhounds were paced by second-year Kyle Higgins (Braintree, MA) and his eight place finish (28:16) while classmate's Chris Trajkovsky (Wilbraham, MA) recorded 16th (28:59) and Peter Jusseaume (Marshfield, MA) tallied 17th (29:04).
Senior Caleb Evanter (Marlblehead, MA) led the charge for the Cougars as he took home seventh (28:10) while sophomore Joe Kennelly (New Windsor, NY) and junior Martin Leggett (Bangor, PA) each placed 26th (29:41) and 28th (30:20), respectively.
Worcester State was propelled by freshman Alex Droby (Uxbridge, MA) who collected 13th (28:53) while classmate Tim Mazeika (Millbury, MA) finished in 20th (29:10). Anna Maria's top finisher was first-year Dan Sanches (Ludlow, MA) in 50th (32:14).
