Women’s Cross Country Wins Back-to-Back Worcester City Meets

Paxton, MA --- Freshman Victoria Hewey (Sanford, ME) impressed as she was the top finisher to help lead WPI to its second straight Worcester City Cross Country Meet title this morning at Moore State Park in Paxton. The victory for the Engineers was their sixth overall at the 24th running of the women's race since 1985.

The Crimson and Gray took the top three spots to settle for first with 33 points while Clark notched second with three top ten finishes for 51 points. Assumption (72) edged out Worcester State (77) for third while the rest of the finishers were rounded out by Fitchburg State (108) and Anna Maria (190).

Senior Beth Hegarty (Springfield, MA) and junior Stacey Rauen (San Gabriel, CA) each scaled the 5k course one second apart second (21:01) and third (21:02) while other finishers for the Boynton Hillers included third-year Anne Rocheleau (Shrewsbury, MA) (12th; 22:20), freshman Catherine Duffty (Haverhill, MA) (15th; 22:35) and sophomore Jessica McKniff (Duxbury, MA) (24th; 23:37).

Clark was paced by freshman Zoe Greenburg (Arlington, MA) and junior Heather Goodale (Middletown, CT) who each clocked times in fourth (21:31) and fifth (21:32). First-year Erika Roth (Saco, ME) notched eighth while classmate Sami Vadakin and third-year Emma Siemasko(Beverly, MA) each placed 16th (22:36) and 18th (22:51, respectively.

The Greyhounds were led by junior Kelsey Baltzell (Sutton, MA) who took sixth while sophomore Erynn Sweeney (Braintree, MA) notched tenth (22:02). Third-year Jessica Chmielewski (Newington, CT) also crossed the line in 17th (22:39) while freshman Cathy Griffin (Columbia, CT) rounded out the top finishers in 20th (23:02).

Freshman Brittany Grueter (Foxboro, MA) built on a strong performance from last week as she placed seventh (21:42) while classmate Erin Donohue (Saugus, MA) wasn't far behind in ninth (21:49). Sophomore Meg Plant (Franklin, MA) also registered 11th (22:09) for WSC.

Fourth-year Linda Fortunato (Feeding Hills, MA) finished in 13th (22:27) while freshman Emily Lane (Clinton, CT) tacked on 14th (22:27) to lead Fitchburg State while the top finisher for Anna Maria was Tonique Atkins (New Haven, CT) in 49th with a time of 28:09.
