Men's Cross Country Comes Home 19th at All-New England Championships

BOSTON – Junior Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) finished 36th to lead the WPI men's cross country team to a 19th-place finish overall, and fifth amongst Division III lineups, at the NEICAAA All-New England Championships at Franklin Park on Saturday. All the Engineer entries finished in the top 200 of their respective races.

WPI collected 502 points to finish ahead of regionally-ranked No. 10 Bowdoin (21st, 548), in a rematch from the season opener, and No. 9 Brandeis (28th, 685). Boston University struck gold with 143 points as Division III No. 4 Amherst (176) was second and Maine was third (199).

The top four Division III teams were of the nationally-ranked variety as No. 4 MIT was ninth (279), No. 30 Tufts was 11th (310) and No. t34 Middlebury was 12th (343). In terms of local competition, Holy Cross finished 26th (604), Fitchburg St. placed 33rd (862) and Assumption was 35th (1065).

Scott clocked a 25:27.3 while graduate student Ryan Moran (Pembroke, MA) crossed the finish line 54th in a time of 25:38. Sophomore Justin Trott (North Hampton, NH) came home 119th (26:11.4) as junior Nathan Stomberg (West Greenwich, RI) placed 144th (26:32.8). Sophomore Tristam Winship (Bedford, NH) delivered time of 26:46.4, good for 163rd. Sophomore Jason Bugarin (Fitchburg, MA) was 176th (26:55.5) while senior Tobin Dancy (Shrewsbury, MA) claimed 199th by nearly two and a half seconds (27:21).

Freshman Michael Brady (Medway, MA) guided the Engineers to a 14th-place showing in the sub-varsity race with a 44th-place time of 26:32, which would have been fourth on the team in the championship event. Senior Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA) also had a good showing with a time of 27:12.6 (96th). Junior Daniel Mortimer (Shrewsbury, MA) and freshman Matt Rabasco (Pittsfield, MA) crossed the finish line three tenths of a second apart in 109th (27:23.3) and 110th (27:23.6), respectively. Junior David Goodrich (North Haven, CT) was 135th (27:44.9) as freshman Remi Gaetjens (Limerick, ME) was 150th (27:56.8), junior Kyle Morrison (York, ME) was 197th (29:13.6) and senior Anthony Gallo (Rocky Hill, CT) was 200th (29:16.9).

Men's Cross Country heads to the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday.
