Waterford, CT --- Freshman Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) paced the ninth-place WPI women's cross country team at the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday at Harkness Memorial State Park, the site of this year's NCAA Division III New England Regional later this season.
No. 4 MIT needed only 62 points to take the team crown while No. 3 Tufts finished second (67) and No. 31 Keene State placed third (108). No. 12 SUNY Oneonta was fifth (119) as No. 19 Brandeis was sixth (138) and regionally-ranked SUNY Plattsburgh was eighth (246). The Engineers were comfortably in the top 10 with 267 points.
Halfrey crossed the finish line in a time of 22:55.2, which was 42nd overall and worth 36th-place points. Sophomore Emily Newman (Easton, MA) was 54th overall (23:09.9) while senior Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) came home 60th (23:16.4). Sophomore Jasmine Higuera (Riverside, CA) posted a 69th-place time of 23:36.6 as classmate Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) turned in a time of 23:49.6, good for 86th overall. Junior Liz Hansen (Richmond, RI) was three harriers behind in 89th (23:50.9) and senior Jessica Orr (Westerly, RI) finished in a 97th-place time of 23:55.
The Crimson and Gray head back to Franklin Park on Sunday, November 1 for the NEWMAC Championships, hosted by Wellesley.
