Waterford, CT --- The WPI women's cross country team raced to an eighth place finish at the Caroline Grape '22 Memorial Blue Race at Connecticut College's Harkness Park on Saturday afternoon. The 26th-ranked Engineers raced in a stacked field, which featured 10 nationally ranked squads among the 26 teams at the event.
WPI had three top 50 finishes in the 196-athlete field, led by junior Elise Deshusses (Chapel Hill, NC) who ranked 28th overall in a time of 22:59.90. Graduate student Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) finished 45th in a time of 23:33.70 with junior Grace Hadley (North Reading, MA) just seconds off her pace to take 48th in 23:35.50.
#6 Williams won the team title with 74 points, followed closely by #12 MIT in second with 99. #17 Tufts (122), #15 Bates (163), #23 Middlebury (167) rounded out the top five. #13 Amherst was sixth and #35 Brandeis was seventh. The Crimson and Gray finished ahead of #25 George Fox (OR) (16th) and #28 Wesleyan and was fifth among NCAA Region East teams participating. Tufts' Danielle Page (North Andover, MA) captured individual honors in a speedy 21:02.10.
Also scoring for the Engineers were freshman Michaela Hafford (Holliston, MA) in 63rd place in a time of 23:51.0, while junior Kaylee Gladu (Woonsocket, RI) added a 76th place finish in 24:03.5. Rounding out the Engineer finishers in the varsity race were junior Charlotte Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY) in 98th with a 24:32.1 and senior Sarah Doherty (Goffstown, NH) in 121st place in 25:01.9.
WPI also posted an eighth place finish in the JV event at Conn College, led by a 34th place finish from freshman Elie Bowman (Montville, CT) in 25:06.5.
WPI has a week off before heading to Wellesley to contend for the 2021 NEWMAC title. Action at the Nehoiden Golf Course begins at 11am.
