Brunswick, ME --- Led by a trio of All-Region performers, the WPI men's cross country team raced to a sixth-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Division III East Regional Championship at Bowdoin College.
Senior David Reynolds (Andover, NH), fifth-year Brian Brooks (Brewster, MA), and junior Avi Bissoondial (Millbury, MA) all collected regional accolades with top-35 finishes. Reynolds and Brooks earned the distinction for the second time in their careers, while Bissoondial makes his first appearance on the All-Region squad.
Reynolds bested his own top finish at the East meet, placing 18th overall in a time of 25:51.8 to lead the Engineers. Brooks was next across the line for WPI in 24th place, going 26:16.5, while Bissoondial was 28th in a time of 26:23.0.
As a team, WPI was sixth overall in the crowded 33-team field. The Engineers notched 169 points, behind #2 MIT (21), #30 Bates (72), Colby (82), #31 Tufts (116), and Bowdoin (166). Colby junior Tyler Morris (Weston, MA) captured the individual title, crossing the line first in 24:55.6.
Junior Jarrett Gulden (Walpole, ME) and graduate student Andrew Yatsuhashi (Reading, MA) each finished in the top 60 of the 233-finisher field. Gulden was 49th overall, crossing the line in 27:25.4, while Yatsuhashi took 55th place in 27:39.4.
Also competing well for the Engineers were sophomore Ryan Fischer (Merrimack, NH) and graduate student Alex Simoneau (Attleboro, MA). Fischer raced to a 65th place finish in 27:57.7, while Simoneau placed 108th in 29.03.3.
Reynolds is a strong candidate for an individual berth to the NCAA Championships, which would make him a three-time qualifier - twice individually (2019, 2022) and once as part of a team (2021). Final selections will be announced on NCAA.com tomorrow.
